Copyright in sound-alikes – legal and industry perspectives on Eight Mile Style LLC v New Zealand National Party (the ‘Eminem case’)

*Paul is an IP practitioner and academic. Matt is a litigator with a specialty in IP disputes. Each will provide an introduction to the relevant copyright framework.

*Chelsea recently completed conjoint BMus and LLB (Hons) degrees at the University of Auckland. She will discuss issues she explored in her honours dissertation (supervised by Paul), namely points of tension in music copyright law evident when considering the Eminem case from both a legal and music scholar's perspective.

*Jan is a well-known musician/songwriter and prominent music industry advocate, through her roles as music publisher (Songbroker) and music licensing & supervision specialist (Aeroplane Music). Jan gave expert evidence in the Eight Mile Style trial and will share her thoughts on the implications of the High Court’s decision for local music rights owners and users, as well as tips on how to avoid music copyright infringement.
