🤖 Thoughts on AI, Former All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw and the Rules…
OK, I get that some of you are a bit perturbed by my use of AI on photos in social posts at the moment. (The words, by the way, are always mine ✍️.) But there is method in my madness.
It’s actually the way I’ve navigated the music industry all my life and probably part of the reason I’m only now reaching my creative stride. 🔥
Richie McCaw once said something along the lines of: “I’m a good player because I know all the rules.” 🏉 (Well that is how I understood it...)
When I started out in music, I had to rely heavily on the advice of others. I had a lot of wonderful help and support, but when you’re young, full of ideas and don’t know how the business works, you’re also susceptible to being taken advantage of by loveable rogues… and there are plenty of those. 😏
So I made a decision: learn the rules. Royalties. IP. Production. Distribution. Contracts. Technology. The business behind the creativity. 🎶📚
I’m always watching, learning and researching new technologies — not because I want to use them all, but because my business and creative work need to understand the landscape they exist in.
Then I can make my own decisions. Operate as a lone wolf when I need to. Forge my own path. 🐺
I’m lucky to have people around me whom I trust deeply and turn to for support. But ultimately, I want to understand the tools myself.
So yes, I’m testing AI. 🤖 Sometimes just for fun. Sometimes to see what it can do. Much like when I bought my first computer. Know thyself and know thy enemy.
The jury is still out on exactly where AI will take us and how dangerous or transformative it might become. But when we do find out, I don’t intend to be blindsided.
I’d rather understand the rules. ♟️
